North Central Washington Audubon
The North Central Washington (NCW) Audubon Society is a local chapter of the National Audubon Society. We are a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Our area includes four counties: Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, and Ferry. The total area is just over 12,200 square miles (31,600 square kilometers), which is roughly the size of Belgium. This is one of the largest areas for a single Audubon chapter in the state. The area includes extensive shrub-steppe, aquatic and riparian areas, and upland forest communities.
Mission Statement
To enhance, protect, and restore healthy natural ecosystems and native biodiversity using science, advocacy, education, and on-the-ground conservation to promote the welfare of birds in North Central Washington.
Purpose and Basis of the NCW Audubon Society
- We do birds – watch them, count them, protect them. Birds are one of the grandest expressions of life.
- We believe in community science and life-long learning. We can all be scholars.
- We promote resource decisions based on the best available data and science. Many times, differences dissolve and solutions appear when people have reliable information.
- We try to be honest brokers in environmental conflicts.
- We are “outside consultants” – leading field trips, holding outdoor classes, and doing “dirt work”. We believe that the wonders of nature are best experienced first-hand, not virtually.
- We believe that sustainable economies and ecosystems are the safe routes to the future.
